As personal devices invade the corporation, business leaders are grappling with the implications this has on the security of corporate data. Requests from staff to use their own Smartphones and Tablets for work purposes is wreaking havoc for IT chiefs.

James Coulson of ViewSonic commented: "The use of personal Smartphones and Tablets for work purposes will only increase as no one wants to carry around more equipment than they have to. We urge organisations not to bend their mobile strategies to incorporate these devices but instead, look harder for solutions that meet the criteria of both employee and employer.

IT vendors are attempting to address this issue. VMWare will launch new software to enable two versions of Android to run on one device and RIM has a service that separates work email on the BlackBerry from the personal material that staff keep on their phones. But both initiatives miss the point. Windows is still the dominant IT environment for business applications.

The ideal scenario is a single device that can run multiple operating systems at once, e.g. Windows and Android, therefore creating a clear separation between work and leisure without compromising security. The only thing that is shared is the mutual data storage."
